| Play is not a privilege — it's a necessity Accessibility guidelines
No child should be left on the outside looking in. We design our playstructures so all children can play side-by-side with their friends. Successfully integrating kids with and without disabilities is perhaps the most challenging step in creating an integrated playground for all kids. You will likely want to choose a playground equipment manufacturer with real solutions for access and comparable play value issues.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides for "equal access" features in publicly-used facilities, including playgrounds. Recently the ADA revised its guidelines for accessible play areas, adopting new minimum requirements for elevated and ground-level play activities, as well as surfacing.
Long before the ADA guidelines were defined, however, Landscape Structures was designing a wide array of activities for children of all abilities:
- Our interactive playpanels, which you can install at the ground level of your playground, create fun while helping kids learn.
- Our TuffTurf® surfacing provides a smooth, protective surface for wheelchairs, and features transition edgers to allow easier transition to an adjacent surface.
- Transfer decks and shallow steps improve access for kids with mobility impairments who are not limited to wheelchair access, while ramps allow wheelchair-bound children to join the fun.
We've published information on accessbility requirements, which you can obtain in our Free Literature section. You can also contact your Landscape Structures representative for more complete information on accessibility and guidance for planning your playground to meet your goals. Additionally, the latest information on the development of specific access requirements for playgrounds is available at the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board Web site at www.access-board.gov. |
