Q: I keep reading different statistics about how thick the surface area should be on playgrounds. What is the current standard?
A: The majority of playground injuries are caused by surfaces that are not installed and maintained at the proper depth. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that the critical height of the surfacing meet or exceed the maximum fall height of the adjacent equipment. See their handbook for critical heights of common loose fill materials, or visit www.cpsc.gov.

Q: What is the best curbing or containment product to keep wood chips under a playstructure?
A: There are a few things to consider when determining the best edger material to use for your playground: • Ease of installation: Wood timbers require special cutting in order to accommodate specific angles and concrete curbing requires special forms. Both of these options usually require more than one person to install. • Safety: Wood timbers can cause cuts and splinters. If you are considering treated lumber, make sure it is not treated with potentially toxic substance. • Durability: LSI's maintenance-free TuffTimbers™ edgers are made from high-density polyethylene with a U.V. stabilizer built in to prevent fading and weathering. One person can install these timbers, they can accommodate almost any configuration without cutting, they will not rot or splinter and they have no sharp or hard edges.

Q: What type of base is required before applying TuffTurf® Tiles to a play area?
    A: There are four options:
    1) The most common and most effective base is a concrete slab.
    2) If you are applying TuffTurf surfacing to the bases of slides and swings only, a wood platform is an option.
    3) Asphalt is a third option. Keep in mind that asphalt must cure for at least 30 days before TuffTurf can be applied.
    4) Compact crushed rock is also an option. TuffTurf is then glued to a geotextile filter fabric to keep the TuffTurf from moving. If you have further questions about surfacing options, contact your local Landscape Structures representative.
